The Best Virginia Outdoor Activities with the Grandkids

Nothing is more fun than spending time in nature in the spring and summertime with the ones you love. Enjoy the fresh air, sunshine and smiles of your grandkids. And, as we all know, it’s important to stay active, and what better way than to try to keep up with your grandkids!

Bike, raft, hike, run, climb your way through Virginia. Try some of these fun ideas with your grandkids. After all, you are pretty special to them!

Trails along the James River

The James River Park System features trails that are prefect for hiking and biking at all levels.

Downtown Smithfield.

Walking Tour of Historic Downtown Smithfield

A pleasant way to spend a sunny spring afternoon is to take a walking tour of historic Smithfield! The Genuine Smithfield Walking Tour features over 50 well-preserved, historically-significant buildings from bygone eras. Tours may be self-guided or hosted. 

Belle Isle

The City’s island retreat.  Walk the pedestrian foot bridge to Belle Isle.  Sunbath on the rocks, hike trails with interpreted historical sites, and rock climb on a granite wall.

Virginia Capital Trail

Serious or casual, this 52 mile paved pedestrian and bicycle trail connects Virginia’s past and present capitals of Jamestown and Richmond. Rent or bring your own bike and do as much or as little as you’d like.

Smithfield Station.

Parks – Nature and History

Hadad’s Lake with rope swings and slides, Huguenot Park and Pocahontas State Park are perfect for calm walks, Richmond National Battlefield Park, historic Byrd Park, Deep Run Park in Henrico, Pole Green Park in Hanover, Libby Hill Park in Church Hill, are just a few of the many parks in this area.  

Biking

This region was made to Ride! From Brown’s Island to Pocahontas State Park and many in-between, Richmond boasts some of the most diverse trails available.  

While enjoying a day or two outside, don’t forget to bring along sunscreen, appropriate clothing, insect repellent, bottled water or juice, disinfectant wipes, a few band aids and antiseptic, a light snack, and of course, your camera and phone!
