Fall Outdoor Activities Around Town

Fall is upon us, which means colorful foliage and seasonal fun to see and do!  And the best part is all of Cornerstone Homes communities are perfectly located near so many places that encourage a healthy lifestyle.   From scenic hiking in the mountains or along the James River, to wineries and historic sites, or a drive down the Blue Ridge Parkway.  This is the time of year to get out and enjoy the cooler air and fall foliage in Virginia.

We compiled a short list of some of our favorite outdoor activities to discover this fall!   Centered on the Capitol city of Richmond to the quaint and charming towns of Ashland, Smithfield, & Charlottesville. There is plenty of fall fun!

Things to do around Richmond…

Richmond truly comes alive in the fall, offering a mix of outdoor adventures, cultural events, and seasonal festivities. Whether you want to explore vibrant foliage, enjoy local flavors, or immerse yourself in history, Richmond has something for everyone.

The James River

There is no other city where you can kayak and raft class III and IV rapids in an urban setting.  Richmond is the only place where you can run the rapids, pull out, and walk to a downtown brewery, restaurant, or bar.  Belle Isle is a great place for a picnic, hike, rock climbing, or wading in the river.  The extensive James River Park System features many trails for walking, running, and biking.  A favorite and popular is the Buttermilk Trail!   Take advantage of this gem and the scenic areas around the James River for your outdoor oasis for thrills and relaxation.

Biking & Walking Trails

With a wide variety of unique trails for all skill levels, including the 52-mile Virginia Capital Trail and parks within the city limits, Richmond is known for offering some of the best biking excursions! Head outside for an exhilarating ride through the crisp, fall air, or enjoy a leisurely ride and enjoy the scenery. Your perfect trail awaits

Historic Sites

From the cobblestoned streets of Richmond’s Church Hill to the charming historic district of Smithfield and the stately homes of Charlottesville, the region is rich with historic treasures waiting to be explored. Discover centuries of stories, from the early days of the Virginia Colony to the Revolutionary and Civil War eras. Visit iconic landmarks like Malvern Hill Battlefield, Bacon’s Castle in Smithfield, or Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s famed estate in Charlottesville. Perfect for a family outing, these sites offer a hands-on, engaging "history lesson" that’s both educational and fun for all ages.

Things to do around Smithfield…

Smithfield, known for its rich history, small-town charm, and picturesque waterfront setting, offers many activities to enjoy during the fall season. From exploring its beautifully preserved colonial-era architecture to attending lively seasonal festivals and markets, this quaint town provides the perfect backdrop for autumn adventures.

Windsor Castle Park

Explore Windsor Castle Park, a 200-acre riverside park with miles of walking, hiking, and biking trails. In the fall, the park’s natural beauty is enhanced by the brilliant colors of the changing leaves. The park also features kayaking along the Pagan River, allowing you to experience fall from a unique perspective.

Smithfield Farmers Market

Visit the Smithfield Farmers Market for seasonal produce, homemade goods, and fall-themed crafts. The market hosts several autumn events, including pumpkin patches, live music, and family-friendly activities.

Isle of Wight Country Museum

Step back in time and explore Smithfield’s history at the Isle of Wight County Museum. During the fall, the museum often hosts special seasonal exhibits and events, providing a cozy, educational escape from the crisp autumn air.

Things to do around Charlottesville...

Located between Charlottesville and Richmond, Zion Crossroads offers a delightful mix of small-town charm and outdoor adventures, making it a fantastic destination for fall activities. Discover the greater Charlottesville area.

James Madison's Montpelier

Just a short drive from Zion Crossroads, Montpelier is the historic home of James Madison. In the fall, the estate’s grounds come alive with vibrant foliage. Take a guided tour of the mansion or stroll through the forest trails and enjoy the changing leaves. The property also hosts fall-themed events, including seasonal markets and historical reenactments.

Spring Creek Golf Club

For golf enthusiasts, Spring Creek Golf Club offers a challenging course with stunning fall views. Surrounded by colorful foliage, this course perfectly blends sport and natural beauty.

Charlottesville Wineries

Spend a relaxing fall afternoon exploring the vibrant winery scene in Charlottesville. Start at Cooper Vineyards, where you can sample award-winning wines while soaking in scenic vineyard views. Then, go to Barboursville Vineyards, known for its rich history and renowned Octagon wine. Don't miss King Family Vineyards, offering delicious pours alongside breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
